An introduction

This is a new weblog. It is a weblog dedicated to documenting, researching and exploring the phenomenon of the weekly newspaper.

I will here try to argue for the merits of the weekly newspaper as the only real newspaper. With the advent of the Internet and television, specifically 24-hour cable news, the footprint of most major newspapers is shrinking. Where it is not shrinking it is becoming less regional and more national in focus.

I am a resident (for the time-being) in the State of Maine. There are two major daily papers in Maine. One in Portland and one in Bangor. As a purely observational statistic it appears that nearly half of each paper is currently supplied by the Associated Press or another major paper in the US. Recently the Bangor Daily News published a story syndicated by the LA Times about one of the Maine senators.

Enough is enough. Daily newspapers are slipping in quality and relevance. I believe the future of printed media is in magazines and weekly newspapers. To that end, this website will attempt to collate information I discover on the health and innovations in weekly newspapers and their associated communities.
